Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for human health. Fish oil contains two types that benefit the body significantly, docosahexaenoic acid, known as DHA, and eicosapentaenoic acid, known as EPA. Besides the well-known effects on cardiovascular health and lowering triglycerides, omega-3’s (mainly DHA) also plays a significant role in eye and brain health. As a matter of fact, 15 – 20% of your cerebral cortex and 30 – 60% of the retina is made of DHA, making it the most essential for nutrient for brain and eye health. The highest levels are found in phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylethanolamine.
Low levels of DHA in the brain have been linked to depression and memory loss, and reduced cognitive functioning, to mention a few. Therefore, regular consumption of omega-3 fish oils can be a crucial factor for maintaining good cognitive health and brain function. But it doesn’t stop there.

Scientists have long known that the yellow colour, or pigment, in the macula comes from carotenoids, lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin, collectively known as macular pigment. The macular pigments belong to the xanthophyll family of carotenoids and possess strong antioxidative properties. Xanthophylls are fat-soluble pigments, naturally synthesised in plants and algae to protect them from blue light. Lutein and its close relative zeaxanthin play a critical role in the prevention of age-related macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of blindness1.
According to scientific research, there is a growing consensus that macular pigment is essential for visual performance, due to its blue light filtering properties and antioxidant properties, which protects the macula from degeneration. Higher concentrations of zeaxanthin in a lutein-zeaxanthin combination, in food supplement formulations, may contribute to enrich the macular pigment. Lutein is far more common in our diet as well as in our bodies. However, zeaxanthin appears to be a more potent antioxidant 2. Long-term depletion of the macular pigments has been associated with eye diseases, skin ageing, and atherosclerosis 3, 4. The reason might be a lower defence against free radicals in certain body tissues, especially the eyes.
Carotenoids have also been shown to be necessary for brain functioning. New research indicates it even might play an important role in several different processes ranging from neuroplasticity to neurogenesis. The macular pigments primarily accumulate in the macula (central retina) of the eye. They are also present in the brain and evidence suggests a close correlation between concentrations in the brain and retina. In a four-month, double-blind placebo-controlled trial, older women were supplemented with 12mg lutein/day, 800mg DHA/day, or a combination, verbal fluency scores increased significantly in all three groups. Memory scores and learning rates improved significantly in the combination group, who also showed a trend towards more efficient learning. The study suggests that macular pigment not only plays an essential role in eye health but also in brain functioning.5, 6

Jag har länge haft problem med överansträngda ögon då jag liksom många sitter framför datorn dagligdags i jobbet. Jag har många gånger inte varit särskilt trött egentligen men känt det väldigt tydligt på ögonen. Nu har jag använt clvr och brightsight i drygt en månad och jag är typ lyrisk över resultatet. Innan har mina trötta och överansträngda ögon varit mitt lilla komplex som jag tänkt på när jag mött på andra människor men nu har känslan försvunnit eftersom att jag inte känner av det längre.
